Continued Monitoring in Building Inspections: Why One Reading Is Never Enough

Measure it. Understand it. Fix it properly. When investigating moisture, condensation, mould, or indoor air quality issues, many inspectors rely on a snapshot in time—a moisture meter reading, a thermal image, or a single humidity measurement. These tools are valuable, but they only tell you what is happening at that exact moment. Buildings are dynamic systems. Temperature, relative humidity, dew point, and moisture content change throughout the day and across seasons. To truly understand a problem, you need to observe how the building behaves over time. That is where continued monitoring becomes one of the most powerful tools available to the modern building inspector.
